My camera remained pointed exactly at the window. I didn't want to lose sight of this.
The kid looked as confused as I was, and I felt that was saying something for both of us. I momentarily looked over the camera and, surely enough, the chair was empty. But through the lens, the same boy from the pier stared at me dumbfounded.
"Who... Who are you?" I asked.
"Does that mean you can see me?" He asked back.
I nodded.
"You nodded! That means you can hear me too! Oh my God! Oh my... Wait... Hang on,"
He slapped his hand on his head as he chuckled.
"Oh, who am I kidding..." he said as he stood up, camera still pointed at him. "Well this was a nice change of events, but it's not going to last."
He started to walk out of the classroom.
"Sorry to disturb you, good-bye." He said as he closed his eyes on me and stepped outside.
I remained rooted there for a second then I chased after him. I looked around the corridor.
Nobody was there. Then I lifted my camera up and scanned the corridor with it. Sure enough I saw him at the other end.
"Wait!" I cried, jogging after him.
He turned back around and I almost ran into him.
"Oh, you found me again? Well, whatever," he said blinking and turning around again.
"Am I not supposed to able to see you?", I asked him.
He stopped in his tracks and wheeled around.
"Does that mean you can still see me?" he asked back. I nodded.
"Hold on," he blinked thrice, and then stared back at me.
"I can still see you if that's what you're wondering," I told him flatly.
We remained standing there, my camera remaining pointed squarely at him.
"Who are you?" I asked again.
"I... Erm..." he stuttered, clearly not prepared for the situation he found himself in.
"What are you?" I asked my thoughts suddenly going wild.
"I'm not a ghost, if that's what you're thinking," he answered, "at least not in the true sense of the word. I mean, I'm alive."
"Then why can't I see you without my camera?" I asked back.
"So it's the camera you use to see me," he said looking thoughtful "as to your question, I have no idea."
"Who are you?" I asked a third time.
"I..." he began, then he looked at me through squinted eyes. "Will you remember me?" he asked me all of a sudden.
"Will I what?" I asked back.
"Will you remember, or are you going to forget as soon as you put the camera down?"
My head was spinning. I had just seen the same boy from the pier again, realised I can't see him without pointing my camera at him and, judging by Manas's reaction to the picture and his own reaction to all this, realised that he can't be seen by anyone at all, and now he's asking if I'll remember him? Suddenly my curiosity about all of this got the better of me and I started talking and moving without thinking.
"I promise I will remember you, if not may I never bother you again." I said raising my hand.
The boy gave me a funny look as I realised just how stupid what I said sounded in the current situation.
"If you say so? Well, you say you won't forget, so don't forget. My name is Sam, Samuel Connors." he said trying to pull his lips into a smile.
"Maya?" I spun around to see Alicia waiting by the steps. "Is something wrong? Are you not able to find what you are looking for?"
I spun back around and looked through the camera, but he was gone. Scanning the whole floor he was no where to be found.
"What's the matter?" she asked walking to me. "You look distressed..."
"It's nothing, I'm overreacting." I quickly replied. "It's just that I was just trying to catch a shot of something and you distracted me and now I've lost the shot."
"Oh!" Alicia said biting her tongue, "Sorry, my bad."
"It's okay, why don't we head on down?"
"Yes let's, Valencia's starting to get a little impatient."
Alicia began bounding down the stairs. I made to follow her when suddenly I heard a whisper coming from all around me.
"Please, don't forget."
Then it struck me. Samuel Connors was the boy who disappeared from school. I whipped around. The corridor looked empty as it should. I turned back to face the steps and slowly descended them.
He explicitly said he wasn't one. But for all intents and purposes, I think I just saw a ghost.
